How to Make Black Work

Here is an example of a scarf that has some sheerness to it and is a lovely soft color for this woman. Plus, it has a little black running through it to tie it altogether.

Remember I said to be careful about having a scarf with white in it if you have delicate coloring and are wearing the scarf to offset the black? Well, this is an example of when it works well to have white in it. See those little spots of black? They help to tie the outfit together.

For this model (see her photo at the bottom), her coloring is very soft. These pretty scarves will keep that softness around her face and offset some of the harshness of the black.

This scarf also has some sheerness to it. The pink is a lovely shade for her coloring and the bits of black pull the two colors together.

This scarf has a lot of sheerness to it and, as you can see, black shines through but in a softer way.

This scarf actually has navy blue in it, but it's so dark that it could be worn with black. All of the colors in this scarf work well on the model below.

These shades of blue are pretty with her eyes and the tiny bits of darker color will help balance the black.

This is one of her most beautiful colors so it will look beautiful up around her face.

This scarf has her hair color in it with some gradations of black/gray. The overall look is soft and complements her natural coloring

This is a pretty shade of green on her and, again, the bits of black help pull the scarf and black together into a cohesive outfit.

This has her eye color and hair/skin color in the scarf and then the tiny bits of darker color pull it altogether.

The soft white and peach tones are pretty. The black could appear very heavy on her. She'd have to try to tie it so the black is hidden a bit. This scarf is a bit iffy. When I do the blink test black is what I see first. She'd have to be very strategic in the way she wears it or it will appear to intense with her coloring.

This is a very happy scarf with the pretty polka dots. The sheerness of the fabric will be lovely on her and will keep the darker polka dots from feeling too overwhelming.

As I mentioned in the article, the black in this scarf is too heavy.

Although this has some black the first color we see is beige. So, it will work nicely for her to balance her coloring with the black outfit.

While this has not black in it, the pretty blues are lovely on her and the soft beige/yellows bring in her hair color so it will offset the black nicely.

This scarf is a bit iffy. In this picture it looks sheer, but if you go to the website (by clicking on the picture above) you will notice that when it is tied it looks much heavier. She'd have to try it to see how it looks on her.

If she can tie this scarf so we see mostly the lighter shades of blue it could be very lovely. Otherwise, it will look a bit heavy on her.

This is a gorgeous color on her and makes her eyes look exactly this color. Although the contrast level will be a bit high between it and the black, it will frame her face beautifully.
